"When I first moved to Whistler in 1995, I biked up Black Tusk with a friend of mine and we got up to the microwave towers, close to the peak. It was an amazing bike ride that took us through old growth forests and rock fields. At the top, we had the most excellent views of the Sea to Sky corridor! Two and a half hours to bike up and a thrilling 20 minute bike ride back down to Function Junction, where I lived then (and still do to this day). Black Tusk will always have a special place in my heart." - Dave Petko

Local Story: Black Tusk mountain's sharp upper spire is visible from a great distance in all directions - always a welcome a sign that you're nearing Whistler. Located in the northernmost region of the Canadian Volcanic Arc, Black Tusk is the remnant of an ancient volcano from over 1 million years ago. Whether you're into skiing, hiking, rock climbing or sightseeing, Black Tusk is one of Whistler's most iconic natural features and a must-visit place for locals and visitors alike.
To the Squamish Nation people, the mountain is known as t’ak‘t’ak mu’yin tl’a in7in’a’xe7en, which translates to “Landing Place of the Thunderbird”. The jagged shape of the peak and its black colouring are said to come from the lightning of the supernatural Thunderbird.
